Catherine Hanlon MD

Catherine is originally from Rutherford NJ. She grew up spending her summers at the Jersey shore where she now lives. After graduating from St. Mary’s with honors she attended Lafayette College in Easton PA, where she majored in Biology and minored in French. She lettered in varsity basketball and picked up lacrosse, becoming the 4th ranked left defense wing in the US as a junior, and captaining the team as a senior to an NCAA final. She went on to Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia graduating in 1983. After completing an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in NY, she went on active duty with the US Air Force as a Flight Surgeon, studying Aviation Medicine and aerospace physiology, flying jets, jumping from planes, and rappelling from helicopters doing trauma rescue with the 63rd  “Jolly Green” Helicopter Squad in Europe. Returning to the US she finished her residency at Monmouth Medical Center becoming board certified in Internal Medicine and subsequently dual board certified in Emergency Medicine, and has been practicing Emergency Medicine for 24 years. She was featured as a Fun, Fearless, Female in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1999, voted Educator of the Year by NJ College of Emergency Physicians in 2004, and from 2010 - 2014 was voted Top Doctor in NJ in her field by her physician peers in NJ Magazine. Catherine was Chairman of the ER for 4 years at Monmouth, improving patient care, streamlining efficiency and putting Monmouth Medical Center’s ER in the top 5% of all ER’s nationally for 3 of the 4 years of her chairmanship. She developed and served as Medical Director of the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit which provides adjunct treatment for healing chronic wounds. She is active in teaching medical students and residents as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. Her off duty interests include skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, biking, travel and history. She has been the physician for wilderness and expedition medicine groups around the world, on trips to Antarctica, the Amazon, the jungles of Tikal, the Sea of Cortez, and in Feb 2008 summited Kilimanjaro. Catherine is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, one of only 26 physicians in the US (4 women) cross credentialed in the field. More recently, she is a breast cancer survivor.
